Protecting those that protect us.
Being a police officer is an unbelievably demanding job, needing a wide array of skills executed with a consistently level head. Despite this there is a barrage of risky and stressful scenarios that police officers face on a daily basis. These situations can be overwhelming and extremely dangerous. A new officer cannot afford to lose their head when encountering situations like theft, a suicide attempt or a DUI. That is why cadets are put through a rigorous training process but still it can be a struggle when encountering these types of situations in the real-world for the first time. There is no way that we can give these cadets first-hand experience before they enter the force.
There is no replacement for experiencing these situations. Right? Or is there?

How it is done.
In an attempt to help give new cadets experiential training, the current model is to create scenarios in which actors play out a particular situation. This environment falls short in giving trainees an authentic experience as many aspects need to be compromised either for safety or logistics. For example, when cadets are running a scenario in which they pull someone over for suspected driving under the influence, the cars are parked. High insurance costs doesn’t allow for a more authentic experience because of the potential risks involved.
A police officer’s workplace is not in a classroom or gun range. It is impossible to give them true real-world experience… Until Now!

Something different. Something better.
How it should be done.
We are not suggesting the use of technology just for the sake of technology. We believe that VR experiences can offer cadets a chance to experience these risky scenarios.
safeGUARDvr is a training platform that will give cadets a completely new immersive experience. This technology enables cadets to practice dangerous and stressful policing skills from the safety of the classroom or precinct. They will get to fully enact real-world scenarios. When the cadet encounters that same difficult and risky situations on the job, it won’t be the first time they are exposed to it. |
Our safeGUARDvr platform is delivered in virtual reality with the user being able to make decisions and engage with the world around them. This makes the virtual world feel real and allows for an emotional reaction to this virtual world. There is no longer a concern with the content being delivered the same to each cadet. There is now a standardized platform in which all cadets receive the same exposure to these risky scenarios.
These scenarios are built on strong competency-based curriculum rooted in industry needs as outlined by the Police Sector Council. Our virtual scenarios are designed to accompany our learning modules, which are delivered alongside the VR experiences. These modules will provide the background knowledge on proper process and procedure in a given scenario. Research finds that having this previous background knowledge increases learning in the virtual world as they have the theoretical knowledge on how to proceed. What they lack is practice in apply that knowledge, especially in these risky scenarios.
Through practice and repetition, cadets will continue to build on their knowledge as they work towards mastery. Embedded throughout the programming is a focus on officer, firearm and driving safety.
